I wonder how many people still remember IKEA’s “deadly chest of drawers” incident? The safety incident that almost shocked parents around the world made many parents realize the importance of home safety and the vulnerability of children to their own protection awareness, and also exposed many hidden dangers that still exist in home safety.

The four words of home safety seem simple, but they are actually meaningful. Not to mention how frightening home safety is for some families with children, even adults who already have some ability to protect themselves are often inadvertently harmed.

Many people think that home is safe, and taking care of children at home is often careless, but they don’t know that there are hidden dangers in many places in the home, and some of these safety accidents may not be thought of at all.

Event one

12 year old girl foot stuck mattress with wire penetrating her toes

At 21 o’clock on March 18, a little girl’s foot stuck mattress in the home of a household in Area A of Fenglinshui County, Yindu District, Anyang City, and the situation was very critical. After receiving the alarm, the Anyang Meidong Road Fire Rescue Station urgently sent personnel to the scene. It is understood that the injured person is a little girl of about 12 years old, when she got out of bed, her foot was stuck at the edge of the bed by the spring in the mattress, and a wire pierced into the little toe of the girl’s right foot.

In order to prevent the girl’s injury from further expanding, rescuers comforted the girl while carrying out the rescue, using fire tongs to cut the wire, with a “click”, it took only 1 minute, and the girl was successfully rescued. Considering the urgency of the situation, after rehydrating the little girl, rescuers quickly picked up the little girl and drove the fire truck to transfer the injured little girl to the hospital for medical treatment.

Event two

The mattress spring cuts the instep of the foot, and the wound is up to 15 cm long

A similar incident occurred last May. A woman surnamed Jiang recently complained that she was halfway through her sleep late at night, but unexpectedly she was cut by the spring of the mattress, and a terrible wound of up to 15 centimeters appeared on the instep of her foot. In the end, the manufacturer promised to pay for the medical expenses, but now the manufacturer also responded that after they took the bed back to the factory for inspection, they found that there was no abnormality at all, and they really didn’t know what went wrong.

Jiang Nu posted a complaint on the Internet that she slept halfway through her sleep in the rental house late at night on the 5th, and was awakened by sudden severe pain when she turned over, and she found that a 15 cm wound appeared on the back of her foot and continued bleeding, accompanied by her family, she went to the hospital, and finally had 18 stitches for surgery.

Event three

Broom rod causes knuckle fracture and hand tendon breakage

Mr. Wang in Liaoning used a newly bought broom to clean, but as soon as he started working, the plastic broom head fell off, and just when Mr. Wang was about to install the broom head, Mr. Wang’s right hand was scratched by the broom. According to the doctor’s diagnosis, this scraping can not be light, causing Mr. Wang

Fracture of the index finger joint of the right hand, plus a broken tendon!

During this time, due to the impact of the epidemic, the children spent all their activity time at home, even so, they must be safe. Eliminate potential safety hazards at home, give children a safe environment, family safety needs real-time protection, please put away this protection guide.

You must know these home safety hazards

1. Fall: Children under 6 years old are not recommended to sleep on the upper level of bunk beds

Children’s indoor fall incidents are usually caused by “high beds”.

What are the high beds? Our common mother-in-child beds, bunk beds, bunk beds, loft beds, half-height beds… As long as the height of the bed board from the ground is greater than or equal to 0.8 meters, it is a “high bed”.

Before the age of 6, the child’s body control and balance are insufficient, so it is strongly not recommended to let children under the age of 6 sleep in bunk beds! If you have already bought a bunk bed, you can let your child sleep out of bed first and wait until he is 6 years old before going to bed.

China’s GB24430.1-2009 “Safety Standards for Household Bunk Beds” stipulates several production standards, all of which are specifically designed to avoid falling. When parents choose a high bed, they should look for the following 4 key points:

Structural load-bearing: If it is a wooden material, there should be no moth.

In order to prevent the child from turning over and falling: the railing around the bed should be more than 30cm from the height of the bed, and the height of the mattress mattress should not be less than 20cm after installation. When parents choose a bed, in addition to paying attention to whether the height of the fence is qualified, the mattress should not be bought too high, and the thickness of the mattress of the upper bed should not exceed 10cm.

In order to prevent the child’s body from getting stuck in the bedside fence: for children under 6 years old, the width of the front fence and the ladder should be between 30-40cm, and the distance between the adjacent fences of the railing plate is 60-75mm.

Prevent children from stepping on the air, tripping and falling: The distance between the ladder pedals should be between 20-30cm.

However, many manufacturers and brands in China ignore this standard, thus laying landmines. Parents must pay attention to their own screening when purchasing, if they have purchased a high bed with risk factors, it is best to check it against it and take necessary remedial measures.

Usually, parents should also pay attention to the safety education of their children. Beds, tables, chairs, drawers are strictly forbidden to climb or jump. Adults cannot let go when they are around, otherwise when children are alone, accidents are likely to occur.

2. Collision injury: 3-6 years old children are injured, hitting the sharp corners of furniture is the most common

According to the Child Injury Prevention Advocacy Report released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Global Child Safety Organization in 2012, one of the main sources of injury in children aged 3-6 is the sharp edges of furniture such as wardrobes.

The furniture in the children’s room should be rounded

“Children are naturally active and exploratory, and it is common to run around the house, and it is easy to bump into them when running.” In particular, objects about the height of a child’s head, such as doorknobs, table corners, and sharp edges of furniture, are prone to eye injury. According to national standards, the corner edge of children’s furniture should be made into a 10mm rounded corner, in order to reduce the damage after impact. Even if you are not in the children’s room, you should be careful when choosing furniture with edges and sharp corners. If you have already purchased furniture with sharp edges and corners, you can buy your own protective strips for corner protection.

3. Suffocation: The gap between the guardrails of children’s beds does not exceed 7.5cm

In fact, not only in China, but also abroad, there are many accidents caused by the design of children’s bed guardrails that are too wide, resulting in children suffocation. In 2016, there was a children’s bed accident in the United Kingdom, when the baby’s body slipped out of the bed through the gap that was too wide (fence spacing 11.5cm) when the newly purchased child’s bed bed was sleeping, and his head was stuck between the guardrails, resulting in suffocation death. According to the national standard, the gap between the guardrail of the children’s bed cannot exceed 7.5cm (the baby bed cannot exceed 6cm), parents must pay attention when purchasing!

4. Smashing: In all rooms, cabinets above 80cm should be fixed on the wall

Children have a climbing nature, so there are many cases of injuries caused by furniture dumping. In fact, in order to prevent the cabinet from tipping, China has long had safety standards. According to GB28007-2011 “General Technical Conditions for Children’s Furniture”: cabinet furniture above 80cm needs to be equipped with anti-tipping connections fixed on the wall. The general big brand furniture, in fact, is equipped with fixed connections to the wall, but many parents ignore the instruction manual when installing, or simply do not want to damage the wall and do not install it, which is very unwise.

The narrow furniture against the wall of the children’s room, or the family space shared by the child, the furniture must be fixed to the wall. If the cabinet rack purchased does not come with an anti-tipping device, it can be purchased separately.

In addition, the fall of some small components on the furniture can also cause unexpected dangers. The cabinet drawers for children must be selected with limited snaps, so that when the child uses it, the entire drawer will not be pulled out and smashed hands and feet. Cabinet shelves in high places, preferably with a bezel to prevent falling, if there is no baffle, it should not appear above the child’s head. There are often some children’s room designs that will place bookshelves, photo frames, etc. at the end of the bed, which is actually very dangerous. Once there is a slight vibration, the thing falls, and it will hit the child’s eyes directly.

5. Fall injury: children under 4 years old, children’s room is recommended to lay non-slip floor mats

Shoes and socks are not chosen properly or the ground is too slippery, and children are prone to slipping and falling while running. For children under 4 years old, it is recommended to lay a floor mat or carpet for the children’s room, and when buying socks, choose a non-slip style. Under 4 years old, it is recommended to have a floor mat or carpet in the children’s room.

6. Respiratory damage: unpainted solid wood furniture is easy to become a mold hotbed

Common respiratory injuries in children include acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, allergies, and asthma, which are associated with poor indoor air quality. Man-made pollution such as family members’ smoking and cooking fumes is usually more serious than outdoor pollution, which depends on parents’ consciousness. In addition, it should be noted that the substances released by decoration and furniture materials——— formaldehyde, TVOC, etc. pose a serious threat to children’s health. For example, toluene and xylene in TVOC will cause serious harm to the human central nervous system, respiratory tract and skin. Xu Xiao reminded that wooden floors, complete wardrobes, etc. because of the large area, once the quality is not up to standard, it is easy to cause the formaldehyde of the whole room to exceed the standard, so we must control the quality of individual products, to see whether it meets the E1 level environmental protection level (according to the 2018 new national standard “GB-18580-2017”, E1 level requires the formaldehyde emission of the plate to be less than 0.124mg/m3).

In addition, parents should test the content of formaldehyde and TVOC in children’s rooms once after purchasing soft furnishings and furniture.

After the decoration is completed and the room is fully ventilated for a week, it will be inspected. Because the additives containing TVOC in the paint will volatilize and dissipate within a few days after construction, it is more accurate to test it a week later. When testing, the furniture cabinet door drawers are all open, the room doors and windows are closed for 24 hours and then tested, the detection time lasts for one hour, the instrument should be placed in the center of the open space of the room, not placed inside the furniture, to avoid being affected by excessive local concentration. The testing instrument is preferably TVOC and formaldehyde can be detected. Although the civilian small detector is not accurate, it can also exclude a large number of TVOC exceeding the standard. Of course, it is better to find a professional testing agency for testing. Formaldehyde and TVOC are precipitated from the inside of the plate, and it is likely that after a period of use, more will precipitate. Therefore, even if the first test is no problem, it does not mean that it will not exceed the standard in the process of continuous use, and the window should be often opened for ventilation in the home, especially the children’s room. There is also a knowledge point that most parents tend to ignore: high air humidity and mold breeding are the main causes of allergic rhinitis and asthma. The incidence of rhinitis in the south is significantly higher than in the north, partly for this reason. Some parents think that unpainted furniture is more environmentally friendly and safe, in fact, there is no protection of lacquer, solid wood, board furniture in the south is easy to become a breeding ground for mold, and then induce allergic rhinitis.

7. Vision damage: When buying a lamp in a children’s room, not only look at the wattage, but also look at the lumens

The lack of brightness of children’s indoor reading lighting is one of the reasons why children quickly develop myopia and continue to deepen. According to the Ministry of Industry’s healthy reading lighting standards, the reading illuminance should not be less than 300LUX (lumens). However, this value is not marked for use on the product packaging of most lamps and cannot be evaluated. In fact, this problem is easy to solve, now there is a illuminance measurement APP on the mobile phone, parents can download it by themselves, make simple measurements, and quickly check whether the child’s reading area reaches 300LUX. It should be reminded that children who like to read often hide in different corners to read, so parents should prepare more lamps in the room in practical applications, and do not leave dark corners in the child’s room.
