Multiple methods of reproduction of singlestick trees
Natural selection of the fittest to survive, this is an eternal truth, from which nature evolved creatures abound, the famous single tree is one of them.
Single tree, scientific name green jade tree, the essence is a height of about 2 ~ 6 meters of small and medium-sized trees, plants native to some extremely arid areas of Africa, the shape from the beginning of the normal long leaves – leaves slowly shrink to become smaller – completely lose green leaves, all rely on the green branches of the branches while photosynthesis, while water supply and feeding, over time, their large and many green leaves, have disappeared and degraded into green branches and stems, thus more conducive to adapt to the current harsh natural environment, to obtain super cold resistance. Imagine: if the single tree were like ordinary plants, with countless green leaves and lush green leaves, then there is no doubt that the plant will lose a lot of water due to the persistent transpiration of the leaves, and eventually wither to death.
Affected by this special habit, the single tree can usually grow tall and grow in a warm and humid environment, and complete the mission of inheritance and reproduction. As far as Xiaohua knows, on the market, there are generally three seedling breeding methods for this plant.
The first, sowing.
Since the probability of single trees flowering and bearing fruit on their own is extremely low, the only way to breed new plants by seeding is to go to the flower market to buy seeds. Next, people need to follow the consistent process, germination, soil preparation, potting, and post-management.
The second, cuttings.
1. Time: In principle, it is suitable all year round, but if you want to effectively improve the survival rate of new plants, I personally think that the temperature in May ~ June is more suitable, and it coincides with the growth period of single trees, it is worth trying.
2. Pruning: On the selected mother plant, cut several sections of 8~10 cm long, juice-filling, round and full, healthy and disease-free strong branches as cuttings, during which at least 2 stem segments should be ensured on the cuttings. Then, set the cuttings aside and let the breeze dry the wound naturally.
3. Soil: Singles generally require substrate to be inserted, enough loose and breathable, which is conducive to rooting and germination, promoting plant growth, and not easy to form waterlogging, so you can take an appropriate amount of garden soil, river sand, perlite, vermiculite and other substances, and prepare high-quality planting material that meets the standards according to a certain proportion.
4. Upper pot: carefully insert the cuttings into the substrate, to the extent that the branches are stable and firm, and will not be swayed left and right casually.
5. Post-planting management: refuse strong sunlight and move potted plants to a cool and ventilated place indoors in time; Moderate water control, except for the need to urgently water once after potting, other times, until the new plant is officially potted, should temporarily stop watering.
The third is tissue culture.
Unlike seeding and cuttings, which have been popular for many years, tissue culture is a technique that has only been developed in recent years, aiming to use the totipotency of plant cells to asexually reproduce new strains. In a broad sense, tissue culture is also called ex vivo culture, that is, part of the tissues, organs, and cells of plants are cultured under sterile conditions.
That’s all for today, analyzing and comparing these three propagation methods of this plant, seeding, cuttings and tissue cultivation. Among them, the former is the most traditional, time-consuming and laborious; The latter, tissue culture, operability requirements are not generally high, ordinary people can easily not achieve; As for the cuttings in the middle, it is the best propagation method for many “difficult” plants, not only has a high success rate, but also basically does not take much effort, and it does not take long to get good news, so the most people are accustomed to using this method. If there are no special circumstances, Xiaohua actually recommends that everyone adopt the cuttings method.
